Mr. Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, confirmed during the Administrative Council meeting of the Water Basin Agency for Sakia El Hamra and Wadi Al-Dhahab for the years 2022 and 2023, that the mentioned basin witnessed significant progress in the past year with the completion of several water projects aimed at strengthening drinking water supply and irrigation water for agricultural use.
In his speech, delivered by Mr. Mustafa Fares, the General Secretary of the Ministry of Equipment and Water on behalf of the Minister, Nizar Baraka pointed out that among the prominent water projects, there is the continuation of the rehabilitation works of the “Sakia El Hamra” dam, which was damaged by floods in 2016, with a completion rate of 70%. Additionally, the completion of the desalination plant project in the city of El Kharkarat was highlighted, and it was recently inaugurated to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the Green March.
In the same context, the same official confirmed the Ministry of Equipment and Water’s commitment to completing the seawater desalination plant project in Tarfaya, expanding the seawater desalination plant in Laayoune, and implementing seawater desalination projects in Um Quriu Center. The works for the integrated seawater desalination project in the city of Dakhla will continue, along with ongoing efforts to explore groundwater through the completion of exploratory drilling for drinking water supply.
Mr. Mustafa Fares, acting on behalf of the Minister of Equipment and Water, revealed that the past year saw the completion of several studies related to collaborative management contracts for water resources in various river basins and a remote sensing network, within the jurisdiction of the mentioned basin.
